No competition for other hot drinks
In the strictest sense, real tea is only made from the tea plant itself, such as black tea and green tea. Due to their caffeine content, these varieties were long regarded as competitors to coffee. However, the methods of preparation are not dissimilar; in both cases, it is not for nothing that tea and coffee are referred to as being boiled or brewed. Over time, the so-called tea-like drinks - i.e. dried fruit and herbal infusions - also became tea. Today we use the word tea as a synonym for the method of preparation.
The history of tea
In China, people were already cultivating and drinking tea at least 2,200 years ago. The oldest document from the year 221 BC shows a tea tax in the Qin dynasty. However, this also means that tea may have been cultivated in China much earlier. With increased trade on the Indian subcontinent and in the Indonesian region, tea reached Europe in 1610 via the Dutch East India Company. However, the British East India Company soon secured the trading rights to the new infusion plants, and by the middle of the 17th century, English tea culture had spread to aristocratic households. Around 1740, tea reached northern Germany, where the independent East Frisian tea culture quickly developed, before the drink spread throughout continental Europe via Prussia - and thus also reached Switzerland.
